The San Antonio Zoo

Last October (2006) I went to the San Antonio Zoo. I saw many nice animals there.

They had a lot of different types of birds such as Birds of Prey, Water Fowl, Parrots and many other kinds.
Some of the Birds of Prey I saw were Andean Condors and Bald Eagles.
They had a long lake full of fish with several islands for their Water Fowl. Some varieties I saw were Mandarin Ducks, Whistling Ducks, Mallards and Wood Ducks, Black Swans, Nene Geese and White Pelicans.
The Parrots I saw were Scarlet Macaws, Green-Winged Macaws, Blue & Gold Macaws, Hyacinth Macaws, Lorikeets, Palm Cockatoos and Conures. There were some pretty Parrots called Galahs that looked sort of like Cockatoos that were gray with pink bellies.
There were lots of different kinds of Cranes. Some of them were Crowned Cranes and Painted Cranes.
Some of the other birds I saw where Emus, Flamingos, Ibises, Horn Bills, Blue-crested Pigeons and Peacock Pheasants. There were so many kinds of birds I can't remember them all.

Some of the mammals I saw were African mammals, Anteaters, Large & Small Cats, Kangaroos, Otters, Rodents, Primates, Bears & a variety of others.
The African mammals included African Elephants, Okapi, Zebras, Rhinos, Worthogs, Antelope
Gazelles and Hippos.
The Hippos were the biggest I've ever seen! The 2 White Rhinos were together, because
they are herding animals. The 2 Black Rhinos were separated, because they are solitary
animals.
The Anteaters I saw were Aardwolves, Northern Tamandua and Giant Anteaters.
The Cats were Cheetahs, Asian Jungle Cats, Ocelots, Snow leopards, and Jaguar kittens.
They had several kinds of Kangaroos including Parma Wallabees, Red Kangaroos, Gray
Kangaroos and Tree Kangaroos.
The Otters they have are North American River Otters and Asian Small-Clawed Otters.
The Rodents included Capybaras, Prairie Dogs, and Prevost's Squirrels.
The Primates I saw were White-Cheeked Gibbons, White-Handed Gibbons,
Squirrel Monkeys (Including a baby Squirrel Monkey), Golden Headed Tamarins,
Golden Lion Tamarins, Black and White Colabus Monkeys, Marmosets, Spider Monkeys, Golden-Bellied Mangabees, and Black Mangabees.
Some of the Bears they had were Black Bears and Grizzly Bears.
Other mammals they had include little Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Rock Hyraxes, Coatimundies, Fossas (Giant mongeese), and Bush Dogs.

There was also an indoor butterfly garden that had lots of pretty Butterflies and Plants.
The Owl Butterflies landed on me a lot. They mostly landed on my legs and
shoulders, but two landed on my head!

Some of the Freshwater Fish I saw were Catfish, Congo Tetras, and Piranas.
Some of the Saltwater Fish were Purple Tang and Clown Fish. There were also purple Jellyfish. I saw a few other kinds of Saltwater Fish too.

Some of the Reptiles I saw were snakes, lizards and turtles.
The Snakes they had were Pythons, Anacondas, Rattlesnakes, Copperheads and others.
Some of the Lizards were Eyelash Geckos, Chuckwalas, Desert Iguanas,
Komodo Dragons, and Garials.
The Chuckwalas looked a little like mini Komodo Dragons.
I saw some Galopagos Tortoises and I also saw some other Tortoises and Turtles too.

The Amazonia Exhibit was one of my favorites. It had the Jaguar Kittens, Asian Jungle Cats, Ocelots, Giant Anteaters and some of the other animals. There was a Exhibit called the Gibbon Forest That had the White-Cheeked Gibbons, White-Handed Gibbons, Marmosets, Spider Monkeys, Golden-Bellied Mangabees, Black Mangabees and some of the other Primates.

I had a great time at the San Antonio Zoo! They have a variety of different enclosures for their
animals. Some are kind of sparse and small, but others are more developed to make the animals
feel more at home.
